So, the ball was terrible, the fields were terrible, the officials were terrible and soccer didn't gain any fans despite it being their biggest tournament.

But hey, no bombs!  Mission accomplished, way to go Africa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That basically sums it up...

But I'm thinking soccer as a whole probably did increase their fan base - just not by as much as it could have.  There were numerous reports of large quantities of unsold tickets (be it a result of the global economy, the travel distance or whatever else) but I rarely noticed empty seats in the stadiums.  FIFA did  good by making those seats available to the locals, and in many cases kids, who otherwise couldn't have afforded them and those fans were enthusiastic (even if their horns are despised by most of the rest of of the soccer world).  Those locals were probably already at least a little interested in soccer but it certainly gets competition from cricket and rugby down there.  Maybe some of those people have become fans for life.  And in the US, with the way ESPN/ABC covered this Cup, it seems impossible that at least some people didn't gain a greater appreciation for the sport - even if for no other reason that the patriotism angle that makes the Olympics so popular here.

And Rom, had you been following this thread more closely, you'd have known that I'm right there with you in bashing the Italians for their diving as well as celebrating their elimination from the tourney.

Defending the vuvuzelas as being an African thing is fine.  But when the overwhelming majority of the soccer world hates them then something should have been done about it.  South Africa was given the Cup.  That's plenty of consolation for not allowing them to offend/annoy the rest of the planet.

As far as things being obvious to me (or anyone else) on TV, that's sort of irrelevant.  This tournament has so much riding on it that it deserves the best officiating possible.  FIFA's argument that this event cannot be treated any differently than any other FIFA sanctioned event is a joke - sort of like saying that the minor league All-Star game must be played under the exact same conditions, rules and environment as the World Series.  There's much more at stake and much more money involved to even consider them equal.  Of course the players and the balls are faster - the game has evolved.  FIFA has failed by not also evolving.

1: the ball isnt terrible. Its different, yea and it makes it harder for the keeper, yea but still its not terrible. I cant stand all those discussions about the ball all the time, its all the time the same.
2: banning the vuvuzuelas from the WC would have be a freakin joke and offensive to SAs IMO. vuvus are part of the game in Africa and if FIFA decides that the WC will take place in Africa, the rest of the world has to live with what comes with this decision. I dont like lots of stuff in other countries around soccer but I cant and I wont do anything about it.
3: sure everyone is soo smart when watching soccer on TV, but seriously dude? I have watched so many games and yea there were many situations were I thought that was a bad call and after all it was but it was a tough decision to make in real time so Im fine with some bad calls, they just happen once in a while. But I cant remember that I have seen any tournament, league or something similar with so many bad calls and those being that obvious and IMO easy to prevent. Its rediculous that a team like USA doesnt win a match because one goal in the last minutes isnt given which was more then obvious. Thats just sad. Destroying games because of false red cards is frustrating me. Not given red cards for fouls where I would say someone should be banned from soccer for 2-3 months, like the Kung-Fu fight by De Jong, is plain stupid and seriously pissing me off. I just have the feeling that FIFA is talking way too much to their referees apparently and kinda confusing them. I saw lots of decisions for a yellow/red card that was far away from it and some where I cant believe they didnt get a red card, after all I am the one whos confused as this whole thing just doesnt make any sense anymore.. I feel like there are rules but how the player is punished is just bad luck or pure luck.

Hockey gets the same bad rep in terms of officiating.  It's like sometimes the refs get a call before a game to stop calling such and such penalties and start calling such and such penalties more... even if they don't actually occur.

Chilly, take your Shruew talk and shove it back into him next time u make sexy time, while on your trip to Utah. Yeah, everything was soooo terrible. ugh. gtfo.

I can agree with FIFA not evolving full on. Hopefully, some things can change for the better without over-correcting (like video review every 5 minutes - unlikely; just sayin)

Squizo, did you see this video?

Players did mention it, and especially goalies, understandably. I just don't know why they didn't say anything while they were training with it?

Soccer, along with baseball and all other major sports without it, need video review. Human error in officiating should be minimized as much as possible. No one watches soccer to see how good the refs can officiate on the fly.

Even more so, what would really benefit from an instant replay review is my crapping.  Every now and then, I will be dropping a deuce, grunting and groaning and even feel water splash back on my ass.  The ref will even say something like, "That was a good one!"  But when I stand to look at my accomplishment.... it's gone!  WTF?  It's times like that when he could go to a replay that would be helpful.  Even a system of lasers that activate when something breaks the plane of the bowl or maybe if my shits were chipped.  I dunno, just spit-balling here.

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id/5707010/goal-line-technology-tested

Quote
NEWPORT, Wales --

Soccer's rule-making body agreed Wednesday to reopen discussions on the use of goal-line technology ...

... test prototype systems and discuss the results at its March 4-6 meeting. After reviewing the 13 systems proposed so far, IFAB laid out the criteria the technology must meet for it to be considered.

"The indication of whether a goal has been scored must be immediate and automatically confirmed within one second," IFAB said.

IFAB is only considering technology to aid referees in deciding whether a ball has crossed the goal line and will not look at systems that rule on whether a ball has gone out of play elsewhere.

Only match officials will be able to receive the information, ...

FIFA really is retarded.

What could possibly be wrong with a open/transparent system - much like hockey uses with the red light that can be seen by all?

I can remember (Chilly & H2o?) people griping about not knowing when a situation resulted in the referee deciding to add extra time to the half and that they felt it was unclear, inconsistent, possibly shady, etc.  This would be more of the same.

**Edit**  This could be more of the same.

Meh.....step forward.

And if there was a contention, I think at least the teams will be shown the proof or whatever.

No wonder the US didn't have their bid to host the 2022 World Cup selected (Qatar was selected)... even though they brought out "the big guns" with highly respected celebrities endorsing their bid.

Morgan Freeman was heavily featured in the campaign... skip to the 7:00 mark to see why we failed...
