The weather gets nice, StarCraft 2 comes closer to being released, people running around playing BC2, CoD4, and even MW2 (yeah, you know who you are).  One’s thoughts turn naturally to why shruew suddenly sucks as the Zerg in the SC2 Beta….  I assume, being me and all, that I am lulling the online community into a false sense of security.

Ranger Squad is somewhat spread out right now as many members are paying a lil attention to real life.  A couple folks even are heading back to Afghanistan…  We’re playing multiple games, but none competitively right now.  As things settle down we’ll see what develops.

  • Yep, we’ve moved to monthly updates.  Though, things are still hopping with more than a few good threads in the forums (not to mention Laser Swords).
  • Many in RS have the BFBC2 demo and we continue to play in MW2 (as well as some stragglers in W@W and even COD4).  Though, some have resorted to playing WoW….
  • Hopefully the full version of BFBC2 will be solid.  We’re also keeping an eye on the new MoH.
  • In closing, please rent Omega Man.

Well, after back…to back … to back … to back … championships across two leagues, Ranger Squad has decided not to do another season in COD4. After nearly 2 years of nightly scrims and weekly matches, enough might be enough. Throw in the seeming death of COD as a PC platform and it’s time to move on.

This streak of success is unprecedented in the 6+ years RS has been around and I hope everyone appreciates that success.  It’s also the first time we put so much work in preparing for so long.  So, I’d like to thank all members of of RS present and past for making this all work.  Setting up nightly scrims (Bo, and GenG early on) is a pain.  Walking through maps in gory detail trying to find every firing angle from every position to lay out the spread is time consuming.  But, it all paid off.

For those curious why this run was so successful, I can point to a few specific factors that were different from other times in RS’s past:

  1. Keep the core team small.  If you’re picking a 8 person roster from a pool of 25, not everyone is going to be prepared.  The downside is you are often scrambling to make the minimum to play a match!
  2. Corollary to the above  on keeping the team small.  Have a team.  RS doesn’t recruit for skill nor do we have an open door.  It’s hard to explain it any further than to say – you have to fit in.  We’ve told more highly skilled players to take a hike than people who couldn’t hit the side of a barn.
  3. Work.  Intra-squad scrims are good for fleshing things out, but playing other teams are essential to see different plays.

Obviously, we couldn’t have scrimmed every night without the help of other teams in the tactical gaming community.  So, thanks to everyone who played us and helped us get our act together.  I can’t even begin to count the weeks where our first couple of scrims we got it handed to us only to make us better come actual match play.

Right now RS is looking forward to the release of the latest Battlefield game, Bad Company 2.  The Medal of Honor relaunch might be interesting.  All we know is that our cuises will demand we find something to play.

  • The regular season for Fantasy Football ends this week. Thorn, shruew, and GenPip have all secured their playoff spots with SkyLark, GenG, Chillybilly, Slobberknockers (?) and an outside RS friend all competing for the final three spots. As the schedule stands now, all could in theory end up tied in W-L record and would go to points for the tiebreakers.
  • In terms of league play, RS is still continuing to discuss options.

  • RS defeats RWC 7-5 in the championship match to bring home the TCC crown (trophy?) for the second straight season. Congrats to the players of last night’s championship match and everyone who helped out during the season.

  • Sometimes the problem with being on the top is that the air is thinner and you stop thinking straight. That must be why Thorn couldn’t beat Kalz0r’s patented “Start People Who Aren’t Going to Play” strategy. Barring Monday night’s activities, half the league will potentially be tied for first!
  • No news in TCC as RS had a bye week. This week is championship time as we face RCW for all the marbles. Not sure how many marbles we’re playing for, but I’m sure it’s a bunch.

  • Wow, made it all the way until Weds without anyone complaining about a lack of updates?!? I’m going to have to try to spice things up a bit. Hmmm, but not this week…
  • RS earned a bye-week this week. Which is somewhat of a shame because Overgrown is a map we’ve had pretty much locked down for a few seasons now. But, would that result in over confidence? Luckily we don’t have to find out.
  • In Fantasy Football we finally have a week ending that has a single leader riding on top – our very own Season 4 Champion: Thorn
